This is a complete bibliography. It contains (to the best of my knowledge) all of his books, including all of the various editions. Question marks indicate missing information.

The bulk of this information comes from the writings of William White, through the kindness of the University of Virginia Library. Additional information comes from the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto. Special thanks to Cosma Shalizi, Kathy Li, Michael McKenny, John Webb and Ray Lisle. I would greatly appreciate any additions, corrections and comments about both style and content.

First issue

Second issue
a. London: Grant Richards, 1900. 337 pp. Reprinted 1903.
The book was not entered for U. S. copyright at the time, but an American edition (using the English sheets) was issued by L. C. Page and Company.
Pale green cloth boards. Stamped in black on upper cover: The Wallet | of Kai Lung | [rule] | [Oriental figure, head and shoulders, holding a wallet, in black, gray, and yellow] | [The whole enclosed within rules]. The first issue of the first edition measures 1.5" thick outside the covers, and has a list of recent fiction on the verso of the half-title. The first American edition, from English sheets, first issue, without the advertisements on the verso of the half-title, with the name of the American publisher on the title-page and spine, and 12 pp. of advertisements following the text. [Note: Two copies with 20 pp. of advertisements have been found.]

Interestingly, this edition is the thickness of the second edition, 1.25 inches, yet has the half-title page of the first issue. First discovered in 1999, and only one copy known (so far.). Possibly one of a series of "Colonial Editions", I have been unable to locate any others.

A.5 What Might Have Been: The Story of a Social War
According to William White, "a rather weak forecast of England under a Socialist government." Men with mechanical wings are featured, which has led to its inclusion in several science fiction bibliographies. As a Socialist dystopia, it is apparently highly regarded by Ayn Rand enthusiasts. Originally printed anonymously.
a. London: John Murray, 1907. viii, 380 pp., plus 4 pp. of ads.
The book shown here (front cover and title page) is as described in George Locke's catalogue of his collection A Spectrum Of Fantasy (London: Ferrett, 1980): "First Edition. light brown cloth; gilt lettering and yellow panel and decoration on spine; yellow lettering, panelling and decoration on front cover; top and fore edges trimmed, lower edge rough-trimmed; white endpapers; pages (381) - (384) carry ads." A similar copy can be found in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto. Issued with dust wrapper.
The Secret of the League DW b. London: Nelson's Library, 1907. ii, 297 pp., 7d.
Published as The Secret of the League: The Story of a Social War. William White and J.H. Lethbridge list this as the first edition, but the introduction describes it as having been first published in 1907. This edition states "first published in 1907" on the copyright page, but is otherwise undated. Includes an uncredited two-page introduction, and no advertisements. Issued with dust wrapper, as shown. [DW added 9-Jun-2002.]
The Secret of the League 1926The Secret of the League c. London: Nelson's Library, 1909. 287 pp. Reprinted, 1920, 2s.; 1926, 1s. 6d.
Published as The Secret of the League: The Story of a Social War. Compared to the 1907 edition, this edition does not have a date on the copyright page (indeed, the copyright page is blank except for the publishers logo), the cover design is different (stamped in gold instead of black), there is a frontispiece illustration signed "Duncan" (woman helping man with mechanical wings), the page block is thinner, and there are two lists of books that are "Uniform" with this book; one at the beginning, and a longer list at the back. The 1926 edition dust wrapper is completely different from the 1907, as shown, but the book it was wrapped in was identical in all points to the 1907 edition; the jacket may have been married to the book at a later time. [DW info added 22-Jun-2002.]
d. Atlanta: Specular Press, 1995. 304 pp. $15.95.
Re-titled The Secret Of The League, with an introduction and glossary by Daniel Jencka. Trade paperback, ISBN #1-8887207-00-7.

A.6 The Transmutation of Ling
With Twelve Designs by Ilberry Lynch. Contains the first chapter from The Wallet of Kai Lung. According to White, the American edition was limited to 500 copies, and the "type distributed.", but this notice appears on both editions, so there is some doubt as to the total number printed. I suspect 500 copies of the page block were printed, and some of these were sent to the U.S.
